MALE COUNSELORS and MALE COUNSELEES - the numbers.
I just had a great Zoom dialogue with Jim Burke, the Director of Certification and Training at the Association of Biblical Counselors as we discussed the issue of male counselors (or lack thereof) and the small number of men compared to women seeking Biblical counselling.
There is a lot of commonality between Canada and the US (and I am sure elsewhere) in terms of training male counselors and attracting male counselees.
"Men become men in the presence of men."
There are many aspects to this statement that pertain to Biblical counseling. Jim mentioned two great reads for men and they are,
1. "New Morning Mercies" by Paul David Tripp
2. "Take Heart" by David Powlison.
He also talked about the three main struggles that men have in life. PRIDE, ANGER and LUST. He called them (PAL) and for women, the big struggles are, WORRY, INECURITY and CONTROL (WIC).
Jim has his own counseling ministry under the name, "Burke Care" and can be found at https://www.burkecare.org
I really challenge all Biblical counselors and Biblical counseling organizations to look at their ratios of male/female counselors and male/female counselees.
Thanks,
